Meet Your Editors —Barry & Bobby Murray

W
ho is Barry Murray?
I am writing this on a laptop on a picnic table outside of our motor home. I am listening to the sound of a waterfall, and blue jays squabbling over a cracker Bobby sailed over their heads, in her quarter-blood Blackfeet heritage of , “feeding the sBarry on the PCTpirits.”

I am of Scottish desentent (with a touch of Swiss) from a long line of wonderers. Starting in the pre-revolutationary Carolinas we pioneered the migration into Tennessee, and kept right on going to Texas, Oregon, California, Hawaii and Alaska. One of my ancestors was the subject of a Charlie Russell painting, leading the first wagon train over the Oregon Trail.

My personal wonderings include pioneering the Pacific Crest Trail, in 1969, by taking my family (children ages 8-10-12) horseback, 2,500 miles, from Mexico to Canada. I sold that article to LIFE, and Holiday Magazines, and the book of that adventure has been published on-line at www.SearchforaShadowofthePast.

Another sojourn was to climb the Chilkoot Pass of Klondike Gold Rush fame,(with the same three childrenat ages 12, 14, and 16) put folding kayaks into the headwaters of the Yukon River, and paddle to Dawson City, and on for a total of 2,000 miles to reach the Bering Sea. This adventure can be read about at Alaska Travel Magazine in an article called Chilkoot To The Sea . It also was released as a travel film.

I have lived with the Choco Indians in the jungle of Panama; attended art school in London, England; was a Contributing Photographer for San Francisco Magazine; hoisted sail in the Florida Keys and Puget Sound; earned passage for two on a cruise ship from New York to San Diego as a guest lecturer; blah, blah, blah…. but none of the above adventures have given me quite the satisfaction of being footloose and fancy free, as driving down the highway in our motorhome.
