“I am particularly interested to be going to the real ghost town of Leadfield, as geologically I really don’t see lead happening in this strata. Perhaps it was named for the fabulously wealthy argentous galena silver strike in Leadville, Colorado, but for that to happen there has to an igneous intrusive nearby. Actually, I did grow up as a minor miner. Worked underground in 1955 on the Colorado Plateau. Was even hired as a prospector for a summer by Homestake of Canada, looking for galena. Photographers notice small details, so I always thought “gift” was in observation. Called a few correctly in my time. But, this doesn’t make sense. I know what lead sulphite looks like. No, this is called an adit. A tunnel has two ends open. These guys did a lot of work for what? Just don’t get it. Now I understand! See those rusted metal building, with sheet metal roofs? Who in their right mind would build a “tin” cabin in Death Valley? The desert can be an oven in the daytime; an icebox at night. The whole town obviously was a Potemkin village, designed and built by big city promoters, only to sell stock to big city suckers. [Later I looked up the history on the Internet and found that lead ore had been brought in from Tonopah for salting. Maps showing the dry and deep Amargosa River had been moved in pictures so ships could be used to haul “bountiful ore from the mines.”] Makes me mad —especially after passing by the reclaimed Bullfrog Mine earlier today, which did benefit mankind— that this mess is blamed on ‘miners.’ Follow the money to find the truth of the situation. Did any bona-fide miners make anything more than wages, if that, here? Then who did? Perhaps even the same respected firms that made a great deal of money selling shares of a resource company named Enron. [As Bobby lost half of her hard-earned retirement in that sham, she has kept abreast of the latest news online. What has happened is almost as difficult to believe as ships on the Amargosa River. Only three ringleaders have supposedly been brought to justice, but that has led to a Federal Judge reducing an already agreed to plea bargain sentence of 10-years, and another in “mansion” arrest with an ankle bracelet while waiting, and waiting, and waiting for his appeal to be heard. Kenneth Lay, who supposedly died in prison, was determined to be not guilty. as he was not alive to appeal! His widow benefited from $40 million that did not then have to be paid to the bankruptcy court. What makes this story almost as good as the wild tales planted in the press by stock salesman promoter, C. C. Julian, is that starting this month an additional $70,000 per month will be coming to the “widow” from a protected annuity. No wonder chat rooms are speculating that Kenneth Lay is alive, has had a complete facelift, and is living well in South America.] Enough of that! Let’s go look for some “protected” petroglyphs. By that, I mean hard to find. The NPS knows very well from experience that some today consider it their right to deface artwork from the ancients, with graffiti of their own. So, moving right along.... |
